Pubs gear up for World Cup bonanza

Stephanie Todd, manageress of the William IV, TruroSome say watching a football match in the pub is better than being in the stadium itself – and judging by the excitement building in local pubs, we’d have to agree.

St Austell Brewery’s pubs are going football crazy over the next few weeks as the country gears up for the biggest sporting event of the year, the 2010 World Cup.

The footie frenzy takes place from June 11 and there’s loads going on in the Brewery’s pubs across the county.

There’s a WAGs cocktail list, featuring the fabulously named Fake Tan Fizzer, Pink Lips and Big Hips, Caribbean Toy Boy, Cider Size Zero and Studs and Stilettos; opportunities to win signed memorabilia and special football-themed menus with dishes to share.

James Staughton, managing director of St Austell Brewery, said: “Football is close to all our hearts – but the World Cup only comes around once every four years.

“We want to make sure as many people as possible get out there, enjoy the perfect party atmosphere and make it an unforgettable summer.

“Pubs are the natural venue to watch sport and we want to showcase our pubs at their very best. Rather than staying at home with your mates, savour the atmosphere in your local pub.

“We’re all keeping our fingers crossed for England’s chances!”

Here are a few of the best places around the county to soak up the atmosphere:

  • Watch all matches al fresco at The Weavers in Bodmin, where there’s a 42-inch screen in the beer garden and the barbecue will be fired up! The Weavers, 11 Honey Street, Bodmin, Cornwall, PL31 2DL 01208 74511

Staff will be in England kits and there’ll be the chance of winning £1,000 in holiday vouchers and a signed Pele shirt with the World Cup Passport.
