Trelawny - an exciting new addition to St Austell Brewery’s permanent draught beer line-up – was officially launched at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show today (June 9th), with a little help from the Fisherman’s Friends.
The first pint of Trelawny, brewed to a unique recipe with Galaxy hops, was pulled by Sir Ferrers Vyvyan, elected president of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association 2011/12.
Hundreds of people gathered in the Brewery’s marquee as the Fisherman’s Friends toasted the new beer with a rousing version of the Cornish anthem, Trelawny. Crowds were then treated to a mini gig by the sea shanty singers to mark the occasion.
James Staughton, Managing Director of St Austell Brewery, said: “I can’t think of a more perfect occasion to launch Trelawny than the Royal Cornwall Show and I am delighted so many people joined us to celebrate.
“You can’t get more Cornish than a beer called Trelawny. It was the perfect name for our new ale – we are fiercely proud to be a Cornish company as we spread our wings, and our beer, further afield.”
Trelawny invokes the best Cornish traditions, heritage and innovation. Locally grown barley is gently roasted to give this beer a classic burnished copper colour and a robust full body which belies its modest 3.8% ABV strength.
It is a unique blend of traditional English Golding and specially imported Galaxy hops from Launceston, Tasmania, which harmonise to give Trelawny a distinctive character of the old and new worlds.
Award-winning Head Brewer Roger Ryman said: “Peach and apricot notes denote the aroma, with hints of butterscotch and toffee apple. The taste is full, with toasted biscuit and jam being balanced by the mellow, yet assertive bitterness of tangy hops.
“We’ve had some very positive feedback already and I’m sure Trelawny will follow in the footsteps of Tribute and Proper Job to become a mainstay of pubs throughout the South West and beyond.”
Earlier this year St Austell Brewery joined forces with the Fisherman’s Friends, who sing in exchange for a few beers.
Mr Staughton said: “We are very, very proud of our association with the Fisherman’s Friends – we love their singing and they love our beer, so it’s a match made in heaven.
“What better way to launch Trelawny than with a pint of the new brew, listening to the Fisherman’s Friends singing one of Cornwall’s best love songs?”
