First ever Row Round Cornwall
Head Brewer Roger ryman
Turning the big FOUR O seems to make people want to do something to mark that moment. And that is no different for Roger Ryman, Head Brewer at St Austell Brewery and Club Rowing Secretary at Charlestown. Approaching his 40th birthday, Roger says,” I felt the need to engage in some sort of challenge and being a keen rower at Charlestown, a long distance row seemed appropriate”

So in May 2007 a crew from Charlestown Rowing Club is planning to row out of Charlestown Harbour to attempt the first ever, complete circumnavigation of Cornwall!.

When asked why he wanted to do the row Roger commented "What do you do when you turn 40? Buy a motorbike? Have an affair? Take on some stupid challenge? The latter of the three seems least risky with the greatest prospects of long term survival!"

The plan is to row around the Cornish coast, heading east out of Charlestown and returning from the west eight days later and raise money for two good causes. Funds raised from the row will be split between RNLI's "Train one, save many" campaign and The Charlestown Rowing Club community building project.

The total journey will be nearly 300 miles, including a trailer push from the upper reaches of the Tamar to the Bude Canal.

How to support the Row

The crew will be stopping off at a different St Austell Brewery Pub each night for an evening event as they make their way around Cornwall. The evenings at the pubs will be a great chance for people to show their support for the event by turning up and enjoying some great live music from a wide range of musicians and having a go at the games and competitions laid on by the local RNLI.

If you cannot make the pub then donations can be made at any branch of the Halifax Building Society. Account name - RRC/Charlestown Rowing Club.

Or look out for the team pushing the trailer on days 2 and 3 of the trip and drop some coinage in the buckets!
