Newquay bar sale makes way for town cinema |
|
Newquay is to get a new cinema with the announcement by St Austell Brewery that it has agreed the sale of the Vic Bars public house in the town to Cornwall-based WTW Cinemas.
The building in King Street was originally opened as the Victoria Theatre in the late 19th century before being run as a cinema, bingo hall and most recently as a pub.
It will be demolished and redeveloped by WTW Cinemas and should prove a welcome addition to Newquay for film fans, with the town having been without a cinema for 13 years.Following speculation in the town prior to the announcement, St Austell Brewery has been approached by at least two local organisations interested in buying the pub’s memorabilia and trademark beer mat collection which adorned the walls and ceilings. Adam Luck, St Austell Brewery Estate Director, said: “We are delighted to announce we have agreed the sale of the Vic Bars to WTW Cinemas and that by doing so we are opening up the opportunity for a valuable new facility to be created for the town. “We are very grateful to Dave and Julia Craddock, managers of the Vics Bars, who established the bar as a popular venue in the town, and we wish them well for the future. The Brewery remains very involved in Newquay, including having invested significantly recently in remodelling the Fort Inn and investing £1.1 million in the current refurbishment of the Great Western Hotel and Steam bar which will reopen with a great new look in the spring. WTW Cinemas has been operating in Cornwall since 1945 and currently has cinemas in Truro, Wadebridge and Padstow. WTW will also operate the new cinema being built in St Austell as part of the town’s £75 million regeneration.
The sale of the Vic Bars was handled by Truro-based agents Scott Burridge Commercial.
