Proper Job wins Champion Bottled Beer of Britain 2025

We’re absolutely delighted to announce that our iconic Proper Job IPA has been awarded Champion Bottled Beer of Britain at this year’s CAMRA competition, revealed at the Great British Beer Festival.

We’re absolutely delighted to announce that our iconic Proper Job IPA has been awarded Champion Bottled Beer of Britain at this year’s CAMRA competition, revealed at the Great British Beer Festival. This long-standing CAMRA award is one of the most respected accolades in the world of beer, shining a spotlight on the winner not only across the UK, but internationally too.

The competition is fiercely independent and rigorous, with judging taking place over two years. It begins with nominations from CAMRA members and volunteer tasting panels, followed by regional heats – all leading to the final stage. Every round is judged through strict blind tastings, ensuring absolute impartiality.

This is the second time Proper Job has taken the top honour – a proud moment for us – and follows a strong history of recognition in the same category, with silver awards in 2019, 2018, and 2014.

As our Brewing Director, Georgina Young, said: “We are very honoured and delighted to be recognised in this category with our amazing Proper Job IPA, which was first brewed in 2006, created using original new style hops made with Chinook and Cascade.

The bottle version of Proper Job claimed the overall champion beer of Britain back in 2011 so it is wonderful for it to be recognised again in a more crowded market. This award is a testament to our commitment to this beer’s original recipe and our drive to improve quality through technical innovation.”

Judges described Proper Job as: “The forerunner of many New World IPAs. A gorgeous looking gold coloured IPA with strong fruity nose and a perfect balance of biscuit, citrus fruits and bitter hops. With an ABV of 5.5%, this is a beer to savour and enjoy.”

We’d also like to raise a glass to Penzance Brewing Co, whose Mild was named Champion Beer of Britain this year. A huge congratulations to the team on this incredible achievement with a truly fantastic beer.

Finally, thank you to CAMRA, the judges, and every one of our Proper Job fans. This win means the world to us – and it’s for everyone who loves great beer, brewed properly.

Cheers from all of us at St Austell Brewery.
