The jewel in the South West's crown

Dorset blends the golden beaches and the fossil-rich cliffs of the Jurassic Coast with chocolate-box villages and rolling green hills, so it’s no surprise the county features some of the UK’s most sought-after places to live. Celebrities, creatives and city escapees flock to Dorset for the slower pace, sea air and a special kind of coastal living.

Visitors are just as welcome, however, whether for a clifftop walk at Durdle Door, to feast on seafood in Lyme Regis or to browse Bridport’s arty markets. Wherever you visit, make sure you include a detour to a St Austell Brewery pub.

Walk the Liberty Trail

This less-well known trail is of historic interest as well as passing through some beautiful Dorset countryside. The 28-mile walk starts at Ham Hill in South Somerset and finishes at Lyme Regis.

As it’s such a long trail it can be completed over a long weekend or short break, or split into stages for day walks. Whatever you do, plan a visit to St Austell Brewery’s Rock Point in Lyme Regis at the beginning or end, to reward yourself with a good dinner – and maybe a comfortable bed for the night.

The trail follows the footsteps of those who, in 1685, walked to join the Duke of Monmouth who was expected to land at Lyme and lead a rebellion against the King. The trail encompasses Crewkerne and Forde Abbey, before carrying on through Dorset into Lyme, going past the Iron Age hillforts of Lambert’s and Coney’s Castle. It then joins the Wessex Ridgeway before concluding at the Cobb.
